Rationale for Lesson 3

Lesson 3 aims to introduce learners to an additional media strategy so that they can learn how meaning is conveyed through audio semiotic choices

(Lim & Tan,2018)

Due to practicalities and to pitch the lesson to suit middle primary students, the lesson focuses only three audio modes: (1) environmental, (2) music and (3) sound effects. Nonetheless, teachers could choose to cover other audio modes in the same lesson or in other lessons depending on students' profile and prior knowledge.

Metalanguage

Similar to the rationale in Lesson 1, the whole class discussion introduces and provides a metalanguage for students to discuss about the effect of semiotic choices, how those choices are made to convey particular meanings (Lim, Nguyen & Tan, 2020; Unsworth, 2006). As each semiotic system have their own grammar (Lim, Nguyen & Tan, 2020), the teacher has to introduce the grammar specific to discussion of audio semiotic system.

Final Activity

The final activity requires students to briefly interpret the mood of the image –– applying what they have learnt in both lesson 1 and 2 –– and then integrating their new learnt knowledge of identifying which audio resources would convey a complementary mood. The discussion segment after the last activity provides opportunities for students to use the metalanguage that they have learnt for visual and audio semiotic resources and notice how their peers use these metalanguage in context as their classmates share their respective intent and reasons. Thus, the final activity would serve as an effective concluding activity in recapping and consolidation of learning across lesson 1 to 3.
